IDE cable

The IDE adapter contains no electronics assembly and simply converts dif-

ferently shaped connectors and facilitates the voltage/current supply to the

small 6.35 cm/2.5“ hard disk (5 V/DC via PC adapter).

•  Turn off the computer in which you intend to install the product and unplug it from

the mains voltage. Disconnect the mains plug from the mains socket. Only now

should you open the computer.

•  Attach the 40-pin or 80-pin IDE cable  to the IDE adapter. Pay attention to the correct

orientation (pin 1 on the IDE cable is marked in colour.  See pin 1 on the IDE adapter

in the picture above).

•  Connect the IDE adapter to your 6.35 cm/2.5” IDE hard drive (the single missing pin

on the hard drive 44-pin connector is normal). Also here check that the IDE adapter

is properly plugged in, see image above.

•  If two IDE hard drives are connected to one IDE cable, one has to be set as “Master”

and the other as “Slave”. Otherwise, the two hard drives may not function properly

or not at all.

A small jumper is used for the “Slave” on a 6.35 cm/2.5“ IDE hard drive. See

image above. However, do not  use a standard 2.54 mm pitch jumper shunt

(as you would for 8.89 cm/3.5” hard drives), but a little jumper in 2 mm pitch.

Search the internet for the related operating instructions or the manufac-

turer’s information to know how to change the configuration on 8.89 cm/3.5”

IDE hard drives (or optical drives).

•  Finally plug the power of the IDE adapter into the appropriate connector of your PC

power supply.

If the power connection is not plugged into the computer’s power supply the

6.35 cm/2.5” hard drive will not work.

•  Secure the 6.35 cm/2.5” IDE hard drive with screws at a suitable place in your com-

puter. Make sure that the screws used are not so long that they could damage the

hard drive.

•  Route the cables so that they cannot get caught in the computer fan. Use cable

fasteners to fix the cables in place.

•  Close the computer case again. Reconnect the PC to the mains voltage and switch

it on.

It may become necessary to change the setting in the BIOS/setup, so that

the hard drive is recognized.

Disposal
