Cleaning & Maintenance
Cleaning
It is advised to employ a regular and effective cleaning routine and store the instrument under the recom-
mended conditions, to guarantee a constant and high accuracy of your measurements.
Cleaning Recommendations
The correct and careful cleaning of the measuring tube is very important for achieving good results. The
oscillator of the DENSITY4/5 is made of high-quality borosilicate glass and should never be cleaned me-
chanically. All residues and contaminants have to be removed by rinsing only. Choosing a correct purifier
will always make cleaning faster and measurements more accurate.
In most cases you use two purifiers. The first one is the one that actually cleans the cell. This fluid must
dissolve the sample. The second purifier must remove the first one. Beware that it does not attack the tube
or leave any deposits, as drops of the second purifier will remain in the tube. If, for example, water is used
as second purifier, it has to be distilled water to prevent mineral deposits.
If you measure similar samples in sequence and the samples can be easily removed from the measuring
cell, it is not required to rinse the DENSITY4/5 after each measurement. In this case a careful rinsing pro-
cedure using adequate purifiers must take place after the measurement sequence.
Otherwise if you work with different samples with different chemical properties and these samples are not
mixable and/or can not be easily displaced from the measuring cell, it is advised to rinse the DENSITY4/5
after each measurement.
Cleaning Process
Follow the steps below to clean the measuring cell of the Reichert DENSITY4/5 :
1. First of all you have to fill the first purifier into the measuring cell by using a syringe. To do this, fill the
syringe with an appropriate purifier, connect the syringe and push the liquid from the syringe into the
measuring cell. Refer to
Setting Up the DENSITY4/5
chapter to help you configure the hardware.
2. After that the first purifier should dissolve the sample. How much time is needed depends on how easy
the sample dissolves in the purifier. This process may take a few seconds or even some minutes.
3. Now push the first purifier out of the measuring cell. Push air into the measuring cell by attaching an
empty syringe and pushing the plunger.
4. Fill the second purifier into the measuring cell to remove residues of the first one now. For filling,
proceed as for the first purifier.
5. The next step is to push the second purifier out of the measuring cell. Proceed as for the first one.
6. Dry the measuring cell with dry air.
7. Finally make sure that no liquid remains in the measuring cell.
If you are not sure cleaning was effective, please repeat steps 4, 5 and 6.
