SAFE OPERATION - NON-VERTICAL LIFTING
3.6
NON-VERTICAL LIFTING
Non-vertical lifting can cover a range of activities such as horizontal pulling, cross-hauling, or oblique pulling. Normally Red Rooster pneumatic
hoists should only be used for the lifting and lowering of loads vertically, so using standard Red Rooster hoists for lifting at an angle may cause
damage to the hoist, the supporting structure or trolley if the equipment and structure have not been confirmed as suitable.
Red Rooster has developed a range of hoists suitable for transferring loads between hoists working up to an angle of 45˚ angle from the
vertical.
The range of hoists covered will have ‘CH’ at the end of the model number confirming the hoist has been modified and is suitable for
cross-hauling of loads. Using air hoists with a WLL 20% over the maximum weight of the load being transferred means that neither hoist can be
overloaded. For the effect on hoist loadings at different angles see Diagram 2.
The first hoist should be lowering down while the second hoist lifts the load until the second hoist has the full load at the required position, then
the hook of the first hoist can be disconnected and then the bottom hook of the third hoist is connected to the load and the sequence of lowering
and lifting can carry on until the end of the lift. The modified hoist can only be used when the bottom hook and the load chains are in line and with
the live chain pointing towards the load. See Diagram 1.
