INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Turning Encryption On/Off
Encryption can be programmed to turn on automatically and can
be programmed without the ability to be turned off. It can also be
programmed to be controlled manually. If your radios is set for manual
control of the encryption feature , you may turn the encryption On/
Off using the pre-programmed by your RCA Communications Systems
dealer long or short press function key or you may use the radio menu
(RDR4250 and RDR4280 only):
1. Press “ ” to access to the menu.
2. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to Settings
3. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to Radio Settings.
4. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to Encryption and press “ ”
to select.
5. Press “ ” or “ ” to Enable to turn Encryption On or Disable
to turn Encryption Off. If successful, the radio displays Success.
Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF)
The Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) feature allows the radio to
operate in a radio system with an interface to telephone or other DTMF
based systems. DTMF Codes can be programmed into the radio by
your RCA Communications Systems dealer. DTMF receive/transmit
feature has four optional modes with 32 encode groups with up to
30 characters per group. To use this feature, your radio must have
an access code, which is system dependent. Please contact with your
RCA Communications Systems dealer or system administrator for
more information.
To initiate a DTMF call:
1. Press and hold PTT button.
2. Enter the desired number.
Note:
You can turn off the DTMF tone by disabling all radio tones and
alerts.
Radio Enable/Disable
(RDR4250 and RDR4280 Only)
The Radio Enable/Disable feature allows you to enable or disable
any radio within your system. For example, you may want to disable a
stolen radio, to prevent the thief from using it, then enable that radio
once it is recovered.
Note:
The Radio Disable/Enable feature requires the radio in your
system to have this function enabled. You can only Enable/Disable
a radio that is within communication range. Check with your RCA
Communications Systems Dealer or system administrator for more
information.
Scanning
When a scan is initiated, your radio cycles through the programmed
scan list for the current channel looking for voice activity. The LED
blinks orange and you see the Scan icon on the display (RDR4250 and
RDR4280 only).
There are two methods to initiating scanning:
• Manual Scan:
Initiate scanning manually using the pre-
programmed Scan ON/OFF programmable function key. This must
be programmed by your RCA Communications Systems Dealer.
You can also use the radio menu as described in the Starting and
Stopping Scan section (RDR4250 and RDR4280 Only). When scan
is initiated, your radio will look for and detect matching activity
on all channels / groups included in the scan list (see Scan Lists
section for more information).
• Auto Scan:
Your radio automatically starts scanning when you
select a channel / group that has Auto Scan enabled. Starting and
Stopping Scan Press the programmed Scan side button to start or
stop the Scan. OR - Follow the procedure below (RDR4250 and
RDR4280 Only):
Radio Disable:
The radio receive / transmit functions become disabled
after the radio receives the Radio Disable code. In order to initiate
Radio Disable you must have a radio a model with a display (RDR4250
or RDR4280). To send a Radio Disable code:
1. Press “ ” to access the main menu.
2. Press “ ” or “ ” key to navigate to Contacts and press
“ ” to select.
3. Press “ ” or “ ” key to navigate to the desired Subscriber
ID/Alias and press “ ” to select. You may also press “ ” or
“ ” key to navigate to Manual Dial, press “ ”, input the
Subscriber ID and press “ ” to select.
4. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to “Control Services and press
“ ” to select.
Radio Enable:
The Radio receive / transmit functions become enabled,
if the radio was previously in Disabled status, after the radio receives
the Radio Enable code. In order to initiate Radio Enable you must have
a radio model with a display (RDR4250 or RDR4280). To send a Radio
Enable code:
1. Press “ ” to access the main menu.
2. Press “ ” or “ ” key to navigate to Contacts and press
“ ” to select.
3. Press “ ” or “ ” key to navigate to the desired Subscriber
ID/Alias and press “ ” to select. You may also press “ ” or
“ ” key to navigate to Manual Dial, press “ ”, input the
Subscriber ID and press “ ” to select.
4. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to Control Services and press
“ ” to select.
5. Press “ ” or “ ” key to navigate to Radio Enable, then press
“ ” to select.
6. Wait for acknowledgment.
7. If successful, a tone sounds, and the display shows Success. If
failed, a low tone sounds, and the display shows Failed.
Starting and Stopping Scan
Press the programmed Scan side button to start or stop the Scan. OR –
Follow the procedure below (RDR4250 and RDR4280 Only):
1. Use the Channel Selector Knob to select a channel programmed
with a scan list.
2. Press “ ” to access the menu.
3. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to Scan and press “ ” to select.
4. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to Scan Switch and press “ ”
to select.
5. Press “ ” or “ ” to navigate to ON or OFF and press “ ”
to select.

5. Press “ ” or “ ” key to navigate to Radio Disable, then press
“ ” to select.
6. Wait for acknowledgment.
7. If successful, a tone sounds, and the display shows Success. If
failed, a low tone sounds, and the display shows Failed.
