Description of the Block Diagram
The block diagrams shown in Fig. 3-1 and Fig. 3-2 apply to the R&S ZVA8, the R&S ZVA24, the R&S
ZVA40, R&S ZVA50 and the R&S ZVA67 two-ports and four-ports. Fig. 3-3 shows the R&S ZVA80 and
the R&S ZV110, Fig. 3-4 shows the millimeter-wave system with Converters R&S ZVA-Zxx.
The ZVA is a vector network analyzer covering 300 kHz to 8 GHz (R&S ZVA8), 10 MHz to 24 GHz
(R&S ZVA24), 10 MHz to 40 GHz (R&S ZVA40), 10 MHz to 50 GHz (R&S ZVA50), 10 MHz to 67 GHz
(R&S ZVA67), 10 MHz to 80 GHz (R&S ZVA80) or 10 MHz to 110 GHz (R&S ZVA110). The R&S ZVA8
to ZVA67 are available in a two-port or four-port version, the R&S ZVA80 and R&S ZVA110 only in a
two-port version. Two-port measurements in the frequency range 50 GHz to 500 GHz can be performed
using a four-port ZVA24 or ZVA40, ZVA50, ZVA67 and two millimeter-wave converters ZVA-Zxx (see
Fig. 3-4).
The signals (including the LO signal for the receiver) are generated using one or two synthesizer
boards, depending on the number of ports. The signal processing path comprises a reflectometer
board, an IF board, a network controller and a processor section, comprising a Pentium-PC, I/O
interface and graphics board. The instrument can be expanded to handle future digital and analog
requirements by retrofitting options.
The generator signal on R&S ZVA8 (300 kHz to 8 GHz) is generated on synthesizer board 1, amplified
in the generator section of the reflectometer board and then passes via the bridge to the port (port1 to
4) and thus to the DUT. The reference signal (Ref1 to 4) is split in the bridge and fed to the receiver
section (Receiver Ref1 to 4) on the reflectometer board.
The generator signal on R&S ZVA24, R&S ZVA40, R&S ZVA50 and R&S ZVA67 (10 MHz to 24 GHz,
10 MHz to 40 GHz, 10 MHz to 50 GHz, 10 MHz to 67 GHz) is generated on synthesizer board1,
frequency multiplied, filtered and amplified in the generator section of the reflectometer board and then
passes via the coupler to the port (port1 to 4) and thus to the DUT. The reference signal (Ref1 to 4) is
split in the coupler and fed to the receiver section (Receiver Ref1 to 4) on the reflectometer board.
The generator signal on R&S ZVA80 (10 MHz to 80 GHz) is generated in the base unit ZVA80-BU
(frequency range 10 MHz to 50 GHz on the same way as in ZVA50) and in the converter ZVA-Z75
(frequency range 50 GHz to 80 GHz) and then passes via a coupler to the diplexer and to the port and
thus to the DUT. The reference signal is split in the coupler and fed to the receiver section in the
converter ZVA-Z75 (frequency range 50 GHz to 80 GHz). For the frequency range 10 MHz to 50 GHz a
second coupler is located in the diplexer. The reference signal split in this coupler is fed to the base unit
(50 GHz reflectometer port1 and port2).
The signal reflected or transmitted by the DUT is fed to the port, coupled out in one of the two couplers
(see above) and fed to the receiver section in the converter ZVA-Z75 (frequency range 50 GHz to 80
GHz) or to the reflectometer in the base unit (frequency range 10 MHz to 50 GHz).
The generator signal on R&S ZVA110 (10 MHz to 110 GHz) is generated in the ZVA67 (frequency
range 10 MHz to 67 GHz) and in the converter ZVA-Z110 (frequency range 67 GHz to 110 GHz) and
then passes via a coupler to the diplexer and to the port and thus to the DUT. The reference signal is
split in the coupler and fed to the receiver section in the converter ZVA-Z110 (frequency range 67 GHz
to 110 GHz). For the frequency range 10 MHz to 67 GHz a second coupler is located in the diplexer.
The reference signal split in this coupler is fed to the ZVA67 (reflectometer port1 and port2).
The signal reflected or transmitted by the DUT is fed to the port, coupled out in one of the two couplers
(see above) and fed to the receiver section in the converter ZVA-Z110 (frequency range 67 GHz to 110
GHz) or to the reflectometer in the ZVA67 (frequency range 10 MHz to 67 GHz).
The generator signal on the millimeter-wave converters R&S ZVA-Zxx is generated in the
ZVA24/40/50/67 and multiplied in the converter ZVA-Zxx and then passes via a coupler to the port and
thus to the DUT. The reference signal is split in the coupler and fed to the receiver section in the
converter.
