Distance-based Registration

Distance-based registration causes an MS to register when the distance between the
current BS and the BS in which it last registered exceeds a threshold. The mobile sta-
tion determines that it has moved a certain distance by computing a distance measure
based on the difference in

Latitude and Longitude

between the current base station

and the base station where the mobile station last registered. If this distance measure
exceeds the threshold value, the mobile station registers. See 3GPP2 C.S0005-E sec-
tion 2.6.5.1.4 for the distance calculation and further details.

This is an autonomous registration; see

Autonomous Registration (Home / Foreign

SID / Foreign NID)

If the distance threshold is set to 0, distance-based registration is disabled.

Remote command:

Autonomous Registration (Home / Foreign SID / Foreign NID)

Enables or disables autonomous registrations by roaming status:

●

for home users, i.e. for Mobile Stations operating in the same system (SID) and
network (NID)

●

for foreign SID roamers, i.e. for Mobile Stations operating in a different system
(SID)

●

for foreign NID roamers, i.e. for Mobile Stations operating in the same system (SID)
but in a different network (NID)

In any case, only those mobile stations may perform autonomous registrations that
indicate they are allowed to terminate calls.

A registration is called autonomous if it is triggered by the MS without an explicit com-
mand from the base station, e.g. timer-based, distance-based, power-up or power-
down registrations.

If power-up registration is enabled, the mobile station registers

when it powers on

●

when it switches from using a different frequency block designator

●

when it switches from using a different band class

●

when it switches from using an alternative operating mode

●

upon insertion of an R-UIM into a powered-on ME

If power-down registration is enabled, the mobile station registers when it powers off if
previously registered in the current serving system.
