Self-Charging Battery Back-Up
The s pecial NiCad7-cell 8.4vself-chargingbatteryrecharges continuously during train
operation and should lastfor up to five years. The battery i s a drybattery t hat shouldnot
leak or cause anydamagetoyourengine.
Ifenginesounds seemdistorted
or garbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthe transformer is turned
off,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldbe rechargedorreplaced.
Put theengineinneutralandleavethe track voltage at10-12 volts(high
enough forthelightstoshinebrightlyandtheengine to movesteadily)for 15
minutes.
If thesoundsareimp roved attheendofthe15-minute testcharge,the
battery charge has rundownandcanbe recharged. Thereareanumberofways you
candothis:
Leavetheengineinneutralwithtrackvoltageat10-12 volts for 6-7 hours s o
the battery can fullyrecharge (if your engine has a smoke unit,besure it is
turnedoff).
Use M.T.H.'s battery recharger (soldseparately) that plugs into a wall outletand
aspecial port u nder the tender t o r e charge the batteryovernight without leaving
it onthetrack.
If thesoundsare notimprovedat the endofthe15-minutetestcharge,itis
time to replace the b att
replacement arrives, butsincealkaline batteries
cannot be recharged, it will eventually w ear down.
Depending upon whenyourenginewas
built, it may need t o b e charged right out ofthebox.
