Sample application details and recommendations
Visualization
A vast range of applications can be covered under the visualization umbrella.
Generally, visualization is commonly used about applications that seek to
graphically present large amounts of data, be it photographic or computer
created, such as geophysical data (for instance oil and gas well exploration),
CAD/CAM construction and photorealistic rendering, computer modelled
flow and stress analysis, etc. Immersive and augmented displays and Virtual
Reality go in the visualization category. Visualizatoin aids in understanding
and interpreting data, and in general, require very high resolution displays,
and photorealistic colours with great depth and contrast.
Recommended
colour wheels; 3/6-segment (primary), or 4-segment (secondary) with a small
clear segment added for extra impact.
Simulation
Some simulation applications can be covered under the visualization
umbrella, but in this case, we refer to simulation as that what talkes place
as a substition of real life application. Simulation is primarily used in training
situations, such as for driving, flying, sailing and bridge (ships), as well
as shooting, fire extingushing and a whole lot of other training situations.
Common to most of these applications is that they require photorealistic
rendering, high contrast and detail, and reduced artefacting in the form
of rainbows and breakup.
Recommended colour wheels; 3/6-segment for
reduced artefacting and realistic colours.
Medical imaging
Medical imaging applications include for instance MR and XRay imaging.
General requirements include an accurate grey scale, a correct gamma
transfer function, increased colour depth and reduced artefacting. These
are, of course, a very small part of the requirements in this field, but they are
relevant to the choice of colour wheels.
Recommended colour wheels; 3/6-
segment, or 4-segment with a small clear segment added for extra impact,
depending on the actual application.
Business presentations
Most business presentations take place in rooms and environments where the
presenter has little or no control over lights and environment. High brightness
is often the main requirement, as that makes the presentation easier to see
and the environment less of a problem.
Recommended colour wheels; high
brigthness, 4-segment, or a general graphics display colour wheel (smaller
white segment), for improved colour reproduction.
