Connect the small (micro) USB end of the cable into the back of the controller.
Troubleshooting
If the controller is not working there are several solutions:
Is the Xbox One™ turned on and running properly?
Is the TV turned on and set to the correct source?
Is the cable plugged in on both ends (the console and controller)?
Is the quick release connector
at the large (standard) USB end of the cable connected?

Connect the large (standard) USB end of the cable into the Xbox One™ via a USB port.
Proceed to step 3 if the Xbox One™ is off, otherwise proceed to step 4.

Turn on the Xbox One™ by either touching the Xbox Button on the console or pressing
the Xbox Button on the controller.

The white LED indicator above the Xbox Button will light up. You are ready to play.
