Gases and fumes
WARNING
Fumes that are emitted during the welding process and which replace the clean
air can lead to injury and death.
•
Never inhale the fumes emitted during the welding process. Ensure that the air that
you breathe is clean and non-hazardous.
•
Only work in well-ventilated areas and use ventilation equipment to remove fumes
from the work area.
•
Do not weld on coated materials (galvanised, cadmium-coated or coating containing
zinc, lead or barium). Coated materials will emit toxic vapour which is hazardous when
inhaled. If necessary, use a ventilated gas mask with an air supply or remove the
coating from the element to be welded on the area that is to be welded.
•
The heating of some metals will also cause the emission of highly toxic gases. Refer to
the safety data sheets for these metals and follow the manufacturer’s
recommendations.
•
Do not weld in the presence of materials that will emit toxic fumes when heated.
Fumes from cleaning agents, sprays and degreasing agents can become extremely
toxic when heated.
UV and IR arcs
WARNING
Welding arcs emit ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation, which can damage
the eyes and skin. Never look at a welding arc without suitable eye protection.
•
Always use a helmet that covers the whole face, neck and ears.
•
Use safety glass that meets the requirements. The welding apparatus with 160 A,
requires a shade 12 helmet.
•
Ensure that your skin is covered by protective, fire-retardant workwear and shoes.
•
Use a screen or other cover to protect other people from the welding arc that occurs
when welding.
•
Warn others in the surrounding area before generating a welding arc, so that people
can take protective measures.
