The Motor
The function of the motor is to provide the necessary torque to the hydraulic pump. The
motor has been used for decades to provide efficient, low-maintenance power over long
periods of time. Hydraulic elevator motors generally range between 15 horsepower (hp)
and 40 hp. Power for the motor comes from the building’s power supply.
When the motor first starts, it can draw five to eight times the electrical current of its rated
full load running current, depending on the size of the motor. This condition is referred to
as the starting current. Because of this, devices known as starters/contactors are used as
a means of controlling the amount of voltage supplied to the motor.
Think of this in terms of your automobile’s engine, running at its top acceleration as
measured in revolutions per minute (RPMs), when first started. Over time, this high
acceleration rate would prematurely wear engine parts.
Three methods of elevator starting are used:
Solid-State Relay
. The method employed in
your installation is generally an optional selection. The equipment used and wiring
configuration differ to meet the type of starter connection.
