Streaming Media on the NOOK Color
Your NOOK Color may not come with Netflix, Hulu
Plus, or Pandora built into it. And it may not
let you watch TV on Hulu Plus or Netflix. That’s
because the software built into the original NOOK
Color couldn’t handle those streaming services.
An update to the NOOK in late 2011 and early 2012
changed that—it let you use Netflix. The update
was delivered automatically to NOOK Color users
via WiFi. But that update only gave you the abil-
ity to use Netflix; it didn’t actually download the
Netflix
app to your NOOK Color. If you’d like to
use Netflix on your NOOK color, go pick up the
Netflix app at the NOOK Store (page 50).
There’s a chance that your NOOK Color may not
have received the Netflix update. Fear not; you
can install that update on your own. For details,
see page 435.
At this writing, the update to the NOOK Color did
not
let it use Hulu Plus. But Hulu and Barnes &
Noble are working on giving the NOOK Color Hulu
Plus capabilities as well. So head to the NOOK
Store and search for Hulu Plus. If you find it, you
can download and use it, otherwise you’ll have
to wait for a bit as Barnes & Noble and Hulu work
out any kinks.
As for Pandora, it should be built into your NOOK
Color. If it isn’t, head to the NOOK Store and
download it.

Using Netflix
Netflix is a two-pronged video service—with it, you can have DVDs delivered
to your home or stream videos straight to your computer, NOOK Tablet, or any
other device that supports the use of Netflix.
Because it’s a two-pronged service, it can be easy to get confused about what
you’re buying exactly when you subscribe to Netflix, and what can be streamed
versus what can be delivered to you on DVD.
It’s really pretty simple, though. You can subscribe to the streaming-only ser-
vice, the DVD-only service, or a combination of the two. The unlimited stream-
ing service and the DVD-only service are your least expensive options. The
combination service charges different rates, depending on whether you want to
have one, two, three, or four DVDs out simultaneously.
To use Netflix on your NOOK Tablet, you need to subscribe to the streaming-
only service or one of the combo services.
