9.13 Use of polarized light
1. Remove the specimen from the stage.
2. Put a mirror on the stage and get into approxima -
te focus on the mirror surface.
3. Insert polarizer and analyzer into the light path.
4. Rotate the knurled ring of the analyzer

and,
looking into the eyepiece, reach the darkest posi -
tion available. (Fig. 35)
5. Once the dark is achieved (“extinction” or “Cros -
sed Nicol” position) it is possible to begin the
observation.
6. Remove the mirror from the stage, put a speci -
men and focus.
