278 Chapter 17
17.2.3.1
Single Sensitivity (Gain) Calibration
The EPOCH 1000 Series allows you to perform a sensitivity (gain) calibration using
only one reflector. This normalizes the amplitude response of flaws located at or near
the sound path/depth of the calibration reflector.
17.2.3.2
Multi-Point Sensitivity (Gain) Calibration
The EPOCH 1000 Series allows you to perform a sensitivity (gain) calibration at
multiple points (depths) within a material. By using multiple points, the instrument
can normalize the response of a given reflector across an entire sound path/depth
inspection range, instead of at a single focus.
The multi point sensitivity calibration feature creates a time-varied gain (TVG) setup
for all focal laws within the calibrated region. This allows easy scanning and clear
imaging of potential defects across an entire inspection range.
17.3 Calibrating with a Zero Degree Transducer
Use Olympus transducer part number 5L16-A10P, with a frequency of 5.0 MHz and
an element count of 16 to perform the sample zero degree calibration. This calibration
requires the use of the zero degree wedge, part number SA10P-0L. The calibration
also requires a test block with two known thicknesses made from the material to be
measured. Ideally, the two thicknesses should represent thicknesses that are both
below and above the expected thickness of the material being inspected.
For the example of the following procedure, an Olympus standard 5-step block (part
number 2214E) is used (see Figure 9-31 on page 173 for details).
If the EPOCH 1000 Series is set to work in metric units, the calibration process is
exactly the same, except that the entries are in millimeters rather than inches.
To calibrate using a zero degree transducer
1.
Follow the initial setup procedure described in section 17.1 on page 275.
2.
For the example of the following sections, select the SA10P-0L wedge in the
Beam
setup page accessible by choosing
1/5 > PA Probe > Beam
