Example of dismantling a Shimano
internal gear hub:
Disconnect the gear shift cable to remove the
rear wheel
1.
Disconnect the cassette joint cable so you can
remove the rear wheel from the frame.
2.
Pull the outer casing out of the holder for the
cassette joint casing, then remove the cable from
the hole in the holder.
3.
Remove the cable fixing bolt from the cassette
joint pulley.
4.
If it is difficult to pull the housing out of the
cassette joint pulley casing, insert a 2mm Allen key
or a #14 spoke into the hole in the cassette joint
pulley, then turn the pulley to release the cable.
Then remove the cable fixing bolt from the pulley,
before removing the outer casing from the outer
casing holder.
Unscrew the brake caliper screw and take it off.
5.
Unscrew the wheel screws and put them to one
side. Remove the wheel axis protective washer.
6.
Remove the rear wheel from the derailleur
hanger slot.
To put the wheels back on, carry out the steps
above in reverse.

Mounting / removing a wheel with a Nexus 3
•
Step one: Find the aluminium part with a
window, let’s call it the bell crank. It contains a
lever, which is pulled or pushed by a cable, that
pulls and pushes a metal rod called a push rod.
This rod moves the gear wheels without the
body of the hub. So you need to remove the
bell crank.
•
To do this, find the black nut, which can be
seen on the right in the photo, and unscrew
it with a 10mm spanner. Loosen it, but do not
completely unscrew it.
•
The bell should then be released.
•
Pull on the bell with your hand. It should come
away easily.
•
Be careful not to remove any cables or cable
1. Pull the outer casing from the holder
2. Remove from the hole
