The two dongles are pre-programmed with identical software for the JenNet-IP Smart
Home Demonstration. This software allows either dongle to be plugged into a USB
port of either the Raspberry Pi board or Linksys router (see
) to form a
‘Border-Router’:
The dongle provides the interface with the wireless network (WPAN) side of the
demonstration system, also acting as the network Co-ordinator
The Raspberry Pi board or Linksys router provides the interface with the IP
(LAN/WAN) side of the demonstration system

The dongles can be re-programmed with other applications. Firmware re-
programming of the JN5168 USB Dongles is described in
1.3.8 Border-Router
The Border-Router allows a wireless network to be connected to an IP-based network
and can be based on either of the following devices:
Raspberry Pi single-board computer - see
Linksys router - see
The Raspberry Pi board and Linksys router are pre-programmed with NXP firmware
which allows the device to operate in a JenNet-IP system.
The supplied device is used in conjunction with a JN5168 USB Dongle (see
) to form a Border-Router, which is an interface between the wireless network
(WPAN) side and the IP (LAN/WAN) side of the system:
The Raspberry Pi or Linksys device provides the interface with the IP side of
the JenNet-IP system
The JN5168 USB Dongle provides the interface with the wireless network side
of the JenNet-IP system, also acting as the network Co-ordinator
Note 1:
When using the Raspberry Pi board, a USB
Dongle can be plugged directly into any of its USB ports.
Note 2:
When using the Linksys router, a USB Dongle
should not be plugged directly into a USB port of the
router but connected to a USB port via the USB
extension cable supplied with the router. This facilitates
improved radio performance.
Note 3:
Since both dongles are identical, it does not
matter which one you choose to use in the Border-
Router. You may wish to re-program the other dongle,
e.g. as a packet sniffer based on the Ubilogix Ubiqua
software advertised in the evaluation kit box (the file
JennicSniffer_JN5168_1000000_HP.bin
, provided in
all the JN516x SDKs, must be loaded into the dongle).
