see events at the end of a long fi ber. However, increasing the number of averages also increases
test time. We recommend setting Averages to the lowest value that provides the trace smoothness
that you need.
Index (group index of refraction -GIR)
Note:
This parameter is set in the [Manual] test mode only for all test modes.
The refractive index of an optical fi ber, also known as its Group Index of Refraction or GIR,
determines the speed of light in the fi ber. Refractive index is used by the OFL 200 to determine
cursor and event distances. When setting Refractive Index, enter the value specifi ed by the
manufacturer of the fi ber optic cable you are testing.
To set Index:
1 From the [Setup] screen, use either [ ] or [ ] arrow key to highlight the data fi eld beside
the [Index] label.
2 Use either [ ] or [ ] arrow key to increase or decrease the [Index] value.
3 If setup is complete, press the [Test] key to start a test.
Note:
If you don't know the refractive index value of the fi ber you are testing, use the default value
(1.4681). This value is within 1% of the values specifi ed for most fi ber optic cables.
