The Alteon Web switches in 

Figure 11-1

 have been configured as VRRP routers. Together, 

they form a virtual interface router (VIR).

Web switch 1 in 

Figure 11-1

 has its real interface configured with the IP address of the virtual 

interface router and is, therefore, the IP address owner. It also becomes the virtual router mas-
ter. Web switch 2 is a virtual router backup. Its real interface is configured with an IP address 
that is on the same subnet as the virtual interface router but is not the IP address of the virtual 
interface router.

The virtual interface router has been assigned a VRID = 1. Therefore, both of the VRRP rout-
ers have a MAC address = 00-00-5E-00-01-01.
