OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALL NEWBURN WOOD FIRED HEATING
UNITS.
FUEL
The NEWBURN is suitable for burning split wood and logs only. Do not use other fossil fuels,
wastepaper, briquettes etc. Seasoned, dry firewood should only be used. The fuel quality is directly
linked with the economy of the NEWBURN system and its reliability. Poor fuel will jeopardise the life
of the firebox and fire bricks. Do not use green wood as it will cause excessive build up of creosote.
LIGHTING THE FIRE
If the NEWBURN has been used previously, clean out any excessive ash build up before re-lighting.
Ensure the power supply is on and turn the room thermostat up above room temperature and the
combustion air damper will open. Place several pieces of crumpled paper in the bottom of the firebox
and cover with dry kindling and a few pieces of split wood. Do not use flammable liquid to start the
fire. Light the fire, then close the firebox door. Ensure the room thermostat is turned up to set point
(21 degrees)
RE-FUELLING
Crack open the firebox door for a few seconds before slowly opening fully.
Place wood in the firebox with care to avoid damage to firebrick lining. Space pieces of wood to
allow air circulation between them. Close the firebox door tightly. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE
FIREBOX. The wood should not be placed higher than halfway up the fire door opening. Care taken
in loading will extend the life of the firebrick lining which must be replaced if showing any signs of
deterioration.
COMBUSTION AIR DAMPER OPERATION
The Combustion Air damper is the heart of the NEWBURN as it controls the amount of air for
combustion and therefore fire size. The damper is controlled by the room thermostat to open when
the room temperature falls below what the thermostat has been set and to close when the desired
temperature is reached. A High Limit thermostat to override the room thermostat and close the
damper if the heat exchanger starts to overheat is also incorporated. The room thermostat will
operate normally again once the heat exchanger has cooled down.
