digitizing
The process of converting an analog signal into a digital representation.
DIMM
Double Inline Memory Module. Memory module that supplies system RAM
and memory upgrades. (See also SO DIMM.)

ECP
Enhanced Capabilities Port. A port that meets the enhanced capabilities
standard and provides greater processing speed than conventional ports. (See
also EPP.)
enhanced VGA
A video interface that offers more colors or higher resolution than VGA.
extended RAM
The area of RAM above the first megabyte of memory in the system avail-
able for enhancing system performance.
EPP
Enhanced Parallel Port. A port that meets the enhanced parallel port trans-
mission standards for speed and also supports bi-directional and uni-
directional transmission. (See also ECP.)
F
FM synthesis
A technique for synthesizing sound that uses a combination of modulated
sine waves to produce different waveforms.
function key
The set of keys on the keyboard (usually F1 through F12) that let you get
help and error message information or quickly select frequently used com-
mands.

hard disk
A rigid magnetic storage device that provides fast access to stored data.
