ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION (MOUTH-TO-MOUTH)
(a)
START MOUTH-TO-MOUTH BREATHING
IMMEDIATELY. SECONDS COUNT.
Do not wait to loosen
clothing, warm the casualty, or apply stimulants.
(b)
ASSESS RESPONSIVENESS OF CASUALTY
. Do not jar
casualty or cause further physical injury (
Figure 1)
(c)
IF POSSIBLE, SEND A BYSTANDER TO GET MEDICAL
HELP.
Do not leave casualty unattended (
Figure 2)

CHECK CAROTID PULSE (
Figure 3)
(e)
LAY CASUALTY ON HIS/HER BACK
and place any
available jacket or blanket under his/her shoulders.

TILT THE HEAD BACK AND LIFT THE CHIN
to open the
airway (

PINCH CASUALTY’S NOSE AND EXHALE TWO SLOW
BREATHS INTO CASUALTY (
Figure 5)

REMOVE YOUR MOUTH
and check for breathing

CONTINUE GIVING ONE BREATH EVERY FIVE
SECONDS
without interruption. If any air is retained in the
stomach after exhalation by casualty, press gently on
stomach to expel air.

IF CHEST DOES NOT RISE CHECK
for obstruction in
casualty’s mouth: clear foreign material using your finger,
tissues, etc. Use chin lift and recommence mouth-to-mouth
breathing.

WHILE MOUTH-TO-MOUTH BREATHING IS
CONTINUED
have someone else:
(a) Loosen casualty’s clothing.
(b) Keep the casualty warm.
(l)
DON’T GIVE UP.
Continue without interruption until the
casualty is revived, or until a doctor pronounces the casualty
dead. Four hours or more may be required.
(m) DO NOT PROVIDE ANYTHING ORALLY
while victim is
unconscious.
