GPRS Basics
[not configured unless specifically arranged with Natural Power]
GPRS is a standard for transferring data using a GSM
modem. Typically the provider will charge for the data
transferred using this method, rather than the time spent
connected to the network. This type of connection differs
from a conventional modem-to-modem connection in
that the modem actually connects to the Internet, and
communicates with the server application using TCP/IP
protocols. GPRS connections are typically faster, and not
all providers support conventional modem-to-modem data
connections.
This raises two important issues. The first is that in order
for the modem to be able to contact the PC running the
ZephIR (server) software, the server must be running on a
PC that has an Internet IP address. This is commonly the
case with dial up and DSL connections, however corporate
LANs may hide the PCs on the network from the modem,
even though they are capable of accessing the web. The
network administrator may be able to help if this is the
case. The ZephIR will attempt to access the network on
port 1200.
The second issue is that since the modem now has to
contact the server, it requires configuring and triggering.
Configuration must be done every time as the IP address
of the server may change. In the case of ZephIR, this is
achieved by sending it an SMS. This can be done from a
mobile phone or an Internet SMS utility.
Configuration
In order to correctly configure the modem, an SMS
containing the GPRS settings must be sent to it. The
ZephIR software can generate this SMS:
1.
Run the ZephIR PC software.
2.
Select ZephIR>Modem>Generate GPRS String. The
following window should appear:
3.
If the current PC is the one that will access the
ZephIR, click on ‘Get’ to obtain the IP address. If this is not
the case, enter the correct IP address in the ‘IP address’
box.
4.
Enter the access point, username, password and
DNS as given by the SIM card provider. Two suppliers are
pre-set in the software. Simply click on the relevant button
to fill in the information. Note that this information should
be verified with the provider.
5.
Click on ‘Generate’ to create the SMS message.
6.
The SMS message can be cut and pasted into an
Internet SMS utility or entered by hand into a mobile
phone. This message should be saved for future use.
Ensure the PC ZephIR software is running and send the
text message to the ZephIR.
7.
After a short delay, the PC should pop up a message
box ‘New GPRS connection’.
8.
Check the ‘GPRS connection’ checkbox shown
below. The ZephIR is now online.
9.
Once the session is complete, log out of the
ZephIR to break the connection. The connection will also
be dropped if it is unused for 60 seconds.
10. To reconnect to the ZephIR, resend the SMS
message. Note that the most recent ZephIR to connect is
the one that the PC software will communicate with.
If you are experiencing difficulties with the GRPS system
please see the trouble shooting guide in this manual.
