SNMP Agent
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an OSI application layer protocol that facilitates
management information between network devices.
SNMP is based on the manager/agent model of a network management architecture.
An SNMP-managed network consists of three key roles: SNMP Manager, agents, and managed devices.
SNMP commands are typically issued by a network management station which is called a network
manager and are responded to by a network management agent within each managed device.
The SNMP versions are v1, v2c, v3.
SNMP v1 and v2c use community string public and private for authentication which allows SNMP servers
access all objects with read-only or read/write permissions by default. SNMP v3 enhances security with
Data Encryption.
The SNMP manager use three operations to communicate with the Managed devices.
GET/GET Next/GET Bulk is used to retrieve the information from the Managed devices.
SET is used to configure the Managed device.
