In the first part of this document I will discuss the programming
model we’ve developed for the creation of visual effects; this is
followed by a brief introduction to session programming.
Visual Effects Programming: Basics
Here is a summary of the capabilities of our Visual Effect Engine:
•
Four simultaneous color channels (red, green, blue, white).
•
255 shades of each color (plus “off”).
•
Light modulation via wavetable (sine, pulse, triangle).
•
Variable phase control of light waveforms, including real-time
phase shifting.
•
Lights may be modulated to 75 hz, unnmodulated (ganzfeld),
or variations between them. Each color channel may be set to its
own set of frequencies, color ramps, etc.
Lights may be intensity modulated, meaning they vary in brightness
rather than turning from on to off. We call this effect
shimmer
.
I will discuss the technical details of this system in the context of
the
Procyon Editor
software tool we’ve developed for session crea-
tion.
Segments and session format
.
A
session
is made up of a number of a number of
segments
.
Segments may vary in length from 0.5 seconds to 10.0 minutes, in
half to a tenth of a second increments.
For each segment, the author determines a
start value
and a
finish
value
for each programmable parameter; those values then change
in a linear manner from segment start to finish.
