ERROR HANDLING
The following types of errors can occur during the transmission of a message:
»
No reply received when expected
»
Incomplete message received
»
Hardware-related errors, such as framing errors and overrun errors
»
Data transmission errors.
NO REPLY ERROR
A remote instrument must reply to all messages that are sent to it. If the remote instrument doesn’t reply
within a specified time limit (the no reply timeout), the host computer will detect a no reply error. Upon
detection of the no reply error the host computer may retransmit its request to the remote instrument, if
desired.
The no reply timeout is two seconds.
INCOMPLETE MESSAGE ERROR
The expected length of a message can be determined by knowing the length of each of the fields in the
message. The length of the data field of the message is specified by the data length field in the message.
Once reception of a message has begun, each character of the message must be received within a certain
time after the preceding character. This time is called the intercharacter timeout. If the next character of the
message is not received within the intercharacter timeout, an incomplete message error is declared. Remote
instruments ignore any incomplete messages. If the host computer receives an incomplete message, it may
retransmit its request to the remote instrument, if desired.
The intercharacter timeout is 500 milliseconds.
HARDWARE-RELATED ERRORS
If any hardware-related errors are detected during the receipt of a message, the message must be ignored.
Remote instruments will ignore any further characters that are received until a valid start character is
received. The host computer will ignore any further characters that are received until an incomplete message
error is declared.
DATA TRANSMISSION ERRORS
Data transmission errors are detected by checking the checksum field of the message. If the transmitted
checksum does not match the checksum calculated on the received data, a data transmission error is
declared.
Messages with data transmission errors must be ignored. if the host computer receives a message that
contains a data transmission error, it may retransmit its request to the remote instruments, if desired.
