To program and debug a different microcontroller than what is mounted on the board, Atmel Studio must be
configured to allow free selection of devices and programming interfaces.
1.
Navigate to
Tools > Options
through the menu system at the top of the application.
2.
Select the
Tools > Tool settings
category in the options window.
3.
Set the
Hide unsupported devices
option to
False
.

, also microcontrollers and interfaces which are not supported by the on-board
debugger.
3.5.3
Hardware Modifications
The on-board debugger is connected to the AVR128DA48 by default. These connections must be removed before
any external microcontroller can be programmed or debugged. Cut the
GPIO straps
shown in the figure below with a
sharp tool to disconnect the AVR128DA48 from the on-board debugger.
