Installation considerations
INSTALLATION OF A SPEEDSYS300 ODS301
3.2.3 Grounding
NOTE:
Knowledge of the installation of field wiring and protective earth (PE),
instrument earth (IE) and intrinsically safe earth (IS) is required.
The SpeedSys300 ODS301 module requires functional grounding in order to avoid potential
ground noise and EMI effects that can cause unfavourable operating conditions.
Accordingly, a SpeedSys300 ODS301 module needs to be grounded using both:
•
An “instrument earth / GND” (IE
) connection – available via the module’s power
supply connectors (see
and
•
An “intrinsically safe earth / GND” (IS) connection – available via the module’s sensor
input connectors, as applicable (see
).
NOTE:
The
SpeedSys300
ODS301
module
implements
an
“intrinsically safe earth / GND” (IS) that is dedicated to the sensor / input channel
interfaces. Inside the module, the “intrinsically safe earth / GND” (IS) is not
connected to the “Instrument earth / GND” (IE
) in order to allow the IS and IE to
be kept separate in applications that require this, typically applications in
hazardous areas / potentially explosive atmospheres (Ex Zones).
More specifically, a SpeedSys300 ODS301 module must be grounded depending on the
application:
•
For all applications, one “instrument earth / GND” (IE
) terminal per module needs to
be connected to the system instrument earth (IE) / ground.
•
For
ordinary
applications
(non-explosive
atmospheres),
one
“intrinsically safe earth / GND” (IS) terminal per module needs to be connected to the
system instrument earth (IE) / ground.
•
For applications in potentially explosive atmospheres (Ex Zones), one
“intrinsically safe earth / GND” (IS) terminal per module needs to be connected to the
system intrinsically safe earth (IS) / ground.
•
For all applications, any industrial housing, field cabinet (cubicle) or other suitable
enclosure that SpeedSys300 ODS301 modules are installed in needs to be connected
to the system protective earth (PE).
In general, for ordinary applications (non-explosive atmospheres) with a single ground point,
the “instrument earth / GND” (IE
) and the “intrinsically safe earth / GND” (IS) need to be
connected to the same ground.
It is also important to observe the general installation regulations for explosion protection
(see
3.2.7 Installations in hazardous areas
).
A general wiring diagram illustrating the required grounding and shielding for most interfaces
in a typical application in an EMC/ESD uncontrolled area is shown in

area is shown in
