Whole-House Water Systems
MANUALLY BACKWASHING AUTOMATIC SYSTEM
You will need to manually backwash your system at the time of initial installation and if:
• You are gone for an extended period of time.
• Automatic backwash has not occurred due to clock failure or electrical failure.
Manual backwash procedures are as follows:
1.
Lift and remove box covering automatic timer.
2.
Turn the Manual Knob on the left (as you face the tank) clockwise
to BACKWASH
position. The water will start running out of the backwash hose or line. You can hear
the water running. Allow the water to run about three minutes. Continue turning the
knob until the backwash water stops. Pause for about 20 seconds to allow the dirt
in the tank to loosen. Continue turning the knob clockwise to the next backwash
position marked either BACKWASH or RAPID RINSE. Allow backwash water to run
for three minutes. Continue turning knob until the backwash water stops. Again
pause for about 20 seconds.
3.
Repeat this on-off backwashing 5-10 times (more if needed) to allow full agitation
of the carbon bed inside to loosen and discharge any dirt in the tank.
4.
The ultimate goal is to have CLEAR water as you start the backwash cycle. The
best way to check this is to look at the water in a clear glass. Fill a glass with water
as it first comes out of the backwash line.
5.
After fully backwashing the system, return the Manual Knob to the SERVICE
position.
6.
Check the day wheel (on the right.) The arrow should point to the backwashing
frequency you desire, (7 days is the suggested frequency.) Set the day wheel by
lifting or pulling out the "Days Between Backwashes" dial and rotating it so that the
arrow is pointing to the proper number.
7.
Set the current time of day by depressing the red button and spinning the time
wheel until the correct time appears in the space marked "Time of Day." Backwash-
ing is pre-programmed to occur at 2 a.m.
8.
Put the cover back on the valve head.
START-UP PROCEDURE / INITIAL BACKWASHING
Continued from previous page
6.
When you first begin the START-UP PROCEDURE and INITIAL BACKWASHING OF
THE NEW SYSTEM the backwash water will come out almost black. Don’t worry. The
high grade carbon filter is being thoroughly prepped, a necessary first step to getting
clean filtered water throughout your entire home. Each time you run a complete cycle,
stopping for two to three minutes at BACKWASH then SLOWLY turning and stopping
at RAPID RINSE for two to three minutes, you are thoroughly cleaning and prepping
the new filter. The backwash water will turn from black to gray and then begin to get
more and more clear with each cycle.
7.
Rotate valve control knob on the BACKWASH position and allow backwash water
to run for two minutes. Turn the control knob to the second backwash position marked
RAPID RINSE. Allow the backwash to run for two minutes, checking the backwash
water to see if it is totally clear. If the backwash water is still gray, or if it has tiny black
particles (fines) in it, repeat this procedure until the backwash water is totally clear.
8.
After the backwash has been completed, rotate the valve control knob to the
SERVICE position. Make sure the bypass lever is in the full SERVICE position.
9.
Check the control knob on your right (which is the day wheel indicating how many
days until the next backwash). The white arrow should be pointing at the 7-day setting.
To increase frequency of the backwash, pull this wheel toward you and rotate to the
desired day-setting.
10.
Set the time of day by pushing the red button (which frees the outer notched
wheel). Rotate this wheel until the current time of day appears, then release the button
to set. Backwashing is now programmed to occur every 7 days (or whatever number
was programmed) at 2 a.m.
Plug in the timer
