Magnification
There are three recognized types of magni-
fication in digital microscopy according to
ISO/DIS 18221:
O
Optical magnification
: This corresponds
to lateral magnification of an image
projected onto an image converter. It is
specified as a ratio, e.g. 10:1.
O
Display magnification : This corresponds
to lateral magnification of an image shown
on a monitor. It is specified as a ratio, e.g.
100:1. Note: The M
DIS
display magnification
is the ratio of a given distance on an image
on a monitor to the corresponding distance
on the object.
O
Visual display magnification
: This corre-
sponds to the lateral display magnifica-
tion when viewing a digital image on a
monitor. It is given in numeric form with
a multiplication sign, e.g. 50
× . Note: The
visual display magnification depends on
the viewing distance.
The best microscopes do more than just provide
magnification. Refer also to "Empty magnifica-
tion". The magnified or enlarged image is not
helpful if the process does not make more
details visible as well (resolution).
Empty magnification: Magnifications where the
size of the image continues to increase without
highlighting any additional details because the
resolution capacity is limited.
