System description
The M3 Sonar FLS is a high-resolution, multibeam forward-looking sonar.
Multibeam sonars have an array of transducers that
simultaneously transmits pings (sound pulses) at a
specified frequency to cover a large area in less time than
a single-beam transducer. To generate data, computer
software assigns a colour range corresponding to the
amount of sound reflected off a target. The distance to the
target is determined by the length of time it took to receive
the transmitted acoustic pulse.
To detect small targets at a large view angle, the M3
Sonar FLS uses a unique curved array. It is suitable for
underwater science and environmental monitoring, such as
detecting bubbles from sea-floor gas seeps at long ranges.
The M3 Sonar FLS streams raw sonar data to an Ethernet
port for export to a third-party application.
The M3 Sonar FLS provides high-resolution images that are easy to interpret. The M3 Sonar
FLS detects small objects out to 200 metres at 200 kHz (subject to environmental conditions)
and has a 200° field of view, allowing you to see the full underwater picture in real-time.
The M3 Sonar FLS is designed for mounting on an ROV, but can also be installed on a
full-size AUV.
