CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE A/C
COMPRESSOR BELT TENSION
(only for machines with air conditioner)
WARNING
q
The coolant used in the air conditioning system is very
dangerous. If it is sprayed into the eyes or in case of con-
tact with the skin, it may cause blindness or frostbite. To
avoid any explosion, do not generate sparks and do not
use naked flames near the air conditioner.
q
The adjustment of the belt tension is a mechanical opera-
tion and must be carried out without working on the air
conditioning system
q
Carry out this check with cold engine.
The compressor belt can be reached after opening the engine
hood (see "3.5.1 ENGINE HOOD").
The check is manual and consists in exerting pressure on the belt
(1) at the centre of the section between the compressor (2) and
the pulley (3).
If the pressure exerted is approximately 10 kg, the resulting de-
flection must be approx. 5-6 mm.
When the belt is new, the resulting deflection must be approx. 4
mm.
If the resulting deflection exceeds the values indicated, proceed
as follows:
1 - Remove the belt guard (4).
2 - Loosen the screw (5) that fastens the cam (6).
3 - Loosen the screw (7) that fastens the compressor (2).
4 - Loosen the nut (8) and tighten the screw (9) to achieve the
correct tension.
5 - Secure the belt in this position using the screws (7) and the
nut (8).
IMPORTANT
q
If the belt is worn or in case of doubt on its conditions,
change it and check the tension again after a few hours of
operation.
q
It is advisable to start the air conditioner only with low en-
gine rpm and not during acceleration, to avoid damaging
the system or breaking the compressor drive belt.
