TESTING
HUSH FEATURE
Test the alarm to be sure it is installed
correctly and operating properly. The
push to test button accurately tests the
functions. Do not use an open flame to
test this smoke alarm. You may ignite
and damage the smoke alarm or your
home.
When testing, stand at arms length away
from the alarm as the horn is very loud
and can be harmful to your hearing.
1.
Firmly press the PUSH-TO-TEST
button for at least
5
seconds. The
alarm will sound a loud beeping noise.
This will end when the push to test
button is released.
2
. If the alarm does not sound press the
PUSH-TO-TEST button again. If it still
does not sound, please contact your
electrician to come and check the
wiring of your alarm.
The alarm may also be tested using a
good quality smoke alarm aerosol
smoke test spray. Ensure that the
manufacturers instructions are
followed. Note: If the push to
test/hush button has been activated,
then the alarm will be in reduced
sensitivity mode. Allow
10
minutes to
elapse before carrying out the smoke
spray testing. The reduced sensitivity
mode is indicated by the red LED
indicator flashing once every
10
seconds rather than the normal mode
of once every
40
seconds.
Ensure you test the alarms weekly and
upon return from any vacation or
when no one has been in the house
for several days.
DANGER:
If the alarm sounds without the
test button being pressed you must assume
this is indicating a fire and so requires your
immediate attention and action.
If there is a nuisance alarm simply press
the test/hush button on the alarm to
silence it for
10
minutes.
If, when the alarm goes off, there is no
sign of smoke, heat or noise to indicate
that there is a fire, you should get your
family into a safe place, before you start
investigating.
Check the house carefully in case there is
a small fire smoldering somewhere.
Check whether there is some source of
smoke or fumes, for example cooking
fumes being drawn past the smoke
alarm by an extractor.
If there are frequent nuisance/false
alarms it may be necessary to re-locate
the device away from the source of
fumes.
If for some reason the alarm continues
to sound without smoke or heat being
present (due to insect infestation or
contamination build up for example) the
unit can be silenced by disconnecting
the mains power and removing the unit.
If cleaning the alarm does not correct
the problem it can be returned to the
manufacturer for repair or replacement.
All KingShield smoke alarms have a
combined test/hush button to help you
control nuisance false alarms.
1
.To cancel a false alarm press the
test/hush button located on the cover
for a second and then release it. The
alarm will automatically switch to a
reduced sensitivity condition.
(very large levels of smoke from a
nearby fire will override the hush on
the smoke alarm)In approximately
3
seconds the buzzer will be silent for
10
minutes.
The unit will flash the red light every
10
seconds (instead of the normal
40
seconds)
to indicate the sensitivity is reduced.
On inter-connected alarms, pressing
the test/hush on any other alarm will
not cancel the alarm. Only the unit
with the red LED flash will silence the
alarm.
2
. The unit will reset to normal sensitivity
at the end of the silenced period. If
additional silenced time is required,
simply push the test/hush button
again.
In addition to weekly testing, this alarm
requires yearly battery replacement and
periodic cleaning.
1.
Turn the mains power off to the alarm.
2
. Clean the alarm at least once a month
to remove dust, dirt and debris using
the soft brush or wand attachment to
a vacuum cleaner.
Vacuum all sides and the cover of the
alarm. Be sure all of the vents are free
from debris. If necessary, use a damp
cloth to clean the alarm cover.
IMPORTANT: Do not
attempt to remove the
cover to clean inside the
alarm. This will invalidate
your warranty.
Always turn off the power supply to the
alarm before attempting to replace the
battery. The battery must be replaced
every
3
years or immediately when the
‘low battery’ signal sounds.
WARNING:
Do not use any other type of
battery. This unit requires one standard
9
V battery. Do not use rechargeable
batteries.
1.
Turn off the mains power to the alarm.
2.
Remove the tamper-resist tab fitted
between the mounting plate and
detector. Turn smoke alarm counter
clockwise to detach it from the
mounting plate and gently pull the
alarm down.
3
. Remove the battery.
4
. Connect and insert the new
9V
battery,
noting the polarity of the connections.
Ensure the metal tab is fully depressed
when the battery has been fitted.
5
. Using the push-to-test button, test the
smoke alarm to verify
9
V DC battery
backup. See ‘TESTING’ for more
information.
6
. Re-attach the alarm to the mounting
plate by turning the alarm clockwise
until it snaps into place. Once in place,
insert the tamper-resist tab into the
notch on the edge of the alarm.
7
. Turn the power back on to the alarm
and test it using the PUSH-TO-TEST
button, see ‘TESTING’ section. If the
alarm fails to operate, please refer to
the ‘TROUBLESHOOTING’ section of
these instructions. If problem still
persists, please speak to your electrician.
Do not attempt to remove the cover of
the alarm as this will invalidate your
warranty.
