This receiver is equipped w ith listening modes that allow
you to enjoy an enhanced sonic ambience w ith a variety of
video sources.
In order to obtain the optimum effect from the surround
modes, make sure to input the proper speaker settings
beforehand.

Surround modes
Dolby Digital
The Dolby Digital surround format lets you enjoy up to 5.1 channels
of digital surround sound from Dolby Digital program sources (such as
Laserdisc or DVD softw are marked
). Compared w ith previ-
ous Dolby surround, Dolby Digital provides even better sound quality,
greater spatial accuracy, and improved dynamic range.
Although a full set of speakers (front left, right, and center, surround
left and right, and a subw oofer) is required for true 5.1 channel Dolby
Digital surround sound, this receiver lets you enjoy Dolby Digital (and
Dolby Surround) program sources, even if you connect only the front
speakers.

* LFE = Low Frequency Effects. This channel delivers separate non-
directional bass signals to the subw oofer for more dynamic deep bass
sound effects.
DTS
The DTS multi-channel audio format is available on CD, LD and DVD
softw are. DTS is strictly digital format and cannot be decoded inside
most CD, LD or DVD players. For this reason. If you attempt to listen
to DTS encoded softw are through the analog output of your new CD,
LD or DVD player, you w ill experience digital noise in most cases. This
noise can be quite loud if the analog output is connected directly to a
high pow er amplification system. Proper measures for playing the
digit al out put as described below should be t aken t o avoid t his
situation. To enjoy DTS Digital Surround playback, an external 5.1
channel DTS Digital Surround decoder system or an amplifier w ith a
built-in DTS Digital Surround decoder must be connected to the digital
output (S/P DIF, AES/EBU or TosLink) of a CD, LD or DVD player.
All models are incorporated w ith the DTS decoder.

The indication “
LFE” appears in the display w hen a signal is being

Dolby Pro Logic

w as designed specifically to provide a new sense
of spatiality, directionality and articulation of sounds from Dolby
Surround encoded sources (such as video and Laserdisc softw are
marked
). This is achieved w ith an intelligent, built-in
feedback logic design, a matrix surround decoding and the decoding
of stereo, full bandw idth surround outputs. The PRO LOGIC
II
modes
programmed into this receiver are “ M OVIE” , “ M USIC” and “ PRO
LOGIC” . The “ M OVIE” m ode of t he PRO LOGIC
II
has preset
characteristics to produce a calibrated.
