Cylinder head disassembly involves removal of t h e intake and ex-
haust valves and related components. If they're still in place, remove
t h e rocker arm bolts or nuts, pivot and rocker arms f r o m the cylinder
head studs. Label the parts or store t h e m separately so they can be
reinstalled in their original locations.
2
Before t h e valves are removed, arrange t o label and store t h e m ,
along w i t h their related components, so they can be kept separate and
reinstalled in the same valve guides they were removed from (see illus-
tration).
3
Compress t h e springs on t h e first valve w i t h a spring compressor
and remove t h e keepers (see illustration). Carefully release t h e valve
spring compressor and remove t h e retainer, t h e spring and t h e spring
seat (if used).
4
Pull the valve out of t h e head, then remove t h e oil seal from t h e
guide. If t h e valve binds in t h e guide ( w o n ' t pull through), push
it
back
into t h e head and deburr the area around t h e keeper groove w i t h a fine
file or whetstone (see illustration).
5
Repeat t h e procedure for the remaining valves. Remember t o keep
all t h e parts for each valve together so they can be reinstalled
t h e
same locations.
6
Once t h e valves and related components have been removed and
stored in an organized manner, the head should be thoroughly cleaned
and inspected. If a complete engine overhaul is being done, finish t h e
engine disassembly procedures before beginning t h e cylinder head
cleaning and inspection process.
