4. OPERATION
Arrange the spreader in a stable position on its stand so that it does not tip
over during filling. The hopper is filled with sand or grit using a shovel or from
a bag or silo etc. As gritting is carried out in the forward direction walking on
slippery ice is avoided. If too much sand is being spread the sand-dispensing
knobs located on the shaft (3) can be shortened. In testing the best results
were obtained using screened grit or sand of 4-8 mm. Coarser sand does not
sink into the ice so quickly reducing slipperiness for longer.
5. SERVICE
The Japa 71 grit spreader requires minimal maintenance during the operating
season. The most important service measure is to check the condition of the
wheels and ratchets. The wheel shaft and ratchet mechanism shall be cleaned
and the shaft lubricated with grease as required. At the end of the operating
season the hopper shall be washed with clean water. Check the condition of
the rubber strips (9) (10)
after washing and replace if necessary. Check the
metal parts of the hopper and repair any paint damage. Lubricate the wheel
shaft with grease.
