TROUBLESHOOTING
5.1 GENERAL________________________________________________________________
The troubleshooting chart below lists basic problems that may occur during start-up and operation. For more detailed
information regarding the hydraulic and electrical systems contact your area Jacobsen Dealer.
Symptoms
Possible Causes
Action
Engine will not
start.
1. Parking brake disengaged
or power take-off switch on.
1. Check operator back-up system and start-up procedure.
2. Glow plug has not timed
out.
2. Reset ignition switch and allow glow plug to time out
before cranking engine.
3. Battery low on charge or
defective.
3. Inspect condition of battery and battery connections.
4. Fuel tank empty or dirty.
4. Fill with fresh fuel. Change fuel filter. Bleed fuel lines.
5. Fuse blown.
5. Replace fuse.
6. Relay(s) defective
6. Test and replace relay.
7. Traction pedal not in
neutral.
7. Check position of pedal. Adjust Linkage.
8. Neutral switch on drive
pump not working.
8. Test, adjust or replace switch.
9. Forward sensing switch on
drive pump not working.
9. Test, adjust or replace switch.
Engine hard to
start or runs
poorly.
1. Fuel level low, fuel or fuel
filter dirty.
1. Fill with fresh fuel. Change fuel filter. Bleed fuel lines.
2. Air cleaner dirty.
2. Inspect and replace air filter.

Engine stops.
1. Fuel tank empty.
1. Fill with fresh fuel and bleed fuel lines.

overheating
1. Coolant level low.
1. Inspect and add coolant.
2. Air intake restricted.
2. Clean air intake at radiator.
3. Water pump belt broken or
loose.

Battery not
holding charge.
1. Loose or corroded battery
terminals.
1. Inspect and clean terminals
Battery light on.
2. Low electrolyte.
2. Refill to correct level.
3. Alternator belt loose or
broken

Cutting units not
cutting evenly
1. Cutting heights not set
evenly.
1. Check that decks are level. Check and adjust cutting height.
2. Engine speed too low.
2. Check engine speed with throttle in its fast position.
3. Mow speed not adjusted for
turf conditions.
3. Adjust mow speed for best cut.
4. Air pressure in caster tires
not adjusted correctly.
4. Check tires and adjust to correct pressure.
