Moving the Patient
Patient lifters are designed primarily to lift patients. The relatively small castors make moving
the patient any distance quite difficult. If possible, always move patients from room to room in
a wheelchair or on a trolley. If you must move a patient while supported in a lifter follow these
simple rules:
• Lower the patient so the feet are just off the ground, this makes him/her feel more secure
and lowers the centre of gravity of the machine.
• When manoeuvring in a small area, two carers will make the job much easier, one carer
pushes the lifter while the second carer stands with the patient and helps move the patient
into the desired position.
• To change direction or steer around corners, always walk the back of the machine around so
that it is heading in the new direction then push or pull in a straight line.
• Always look at the patient during the transfer, it is possible for patients to become distressed
or even in some cases go into muscle spasm during transfer. Be aware that some patients
new to sling lifting may be quite uneasy.
Lowering the Patient
Position the patient over the chair or bed to be lowered into and begin lowering.
Make sure the patient remains comfortable during descent. Two straps are provided low down
on the outside of all slings. Use these handles to position the patient correctly, especially when
lowering onto a chair.
When the patient is fully lowered and no longer supported by the sling, the straps may be
unhooked from the yoke or pivoting frame. After unhooking, wheel the lifter away.
