The next menu item,
Interface
, shows at a
glance whether the software and encoder are
set to communicate via the front-panel USB
port or the serial (COM) port. The
USB
box
will be checked at this time. Clicking
RS-232
will bring up a port-assignment utility that is
explained on Page 22.
Clicking
Format
opens a
number of programming
options, many of which are
pertinent to the station s
RDS presence. These
must be set properly and
will be discussed individu-
ally here.
RDS/RBDS
This is important!
This selection essentially switches the Model 720
between North American and European operating modes, selecting
the proper PTY list and enabling the built-in PI calculator for US
and Canadian call letters. Set this to
RBDS
in the US, Canada and
Mexico, and to
RDS
for the rest of the world.
Station Type:
the M/S Switch
This RDS flag is set to
Music
for the preponderance of today s FM
broadcasting. It would be set to
Speech
for an all-news or all-talk
format, even allowing for jingles and promo ditties.
Txmtr Type:
the DI Switch
Set this to
Stereo
unless all transmissions are monaural. The 720
does not support the other, somewhat esoteric (and lost in history)
DI options originally included in the CENELEC specification.
Header
An important feature of the 720, and one that sets it apart from ear-
lier models and most competitive products, is the ability to transmit
scrolling-PS messages from raw, unformatted ASCII text. In the
preferred mode of operation, scrolling-PS messages are preceded by
the special header DPS=. This prepares the encoder to format and
send the following text string to appear on the RDS radio faceplate.
Satellite-delivery music services and some station automation
equipment are able to output only raw, unformatted song title and
artist information to accompany the audio programming. In these
instances, sending the encoder properly-formatted data with the ap-
propriate headers would require either an additional computer rou-
tine or use of a third-party data consolidator to perform off-site
data formatting.
When the
Format
and
Header
selection is set to
Yes (Normal Opera-
tion)
, the Model 720 responds only to scrolling-PS messaging that is
preceded by the required DPS= message header. When set to
No
(Satellite Streaming)
, all ASCII text received via the serial (COM)
port will be parsed by the 720 and sent out as a scrolling-PS mes-
sage.
Needless to say, this software selection should be operated in the
Yes
(Normal Operation)
mode except in those special installations that
utilize unformatted streaming text. This mode keeps the encoder
