1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS ON MAINTENANCE
Please follow these warnings to perform the following operations when servicing an
appliance that uses R-290 gas.
1) Check the area
Before starting to work on systems containing flammable refrigerants, safety checks
are required to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimized. When repairing the
refrigeration system, before performing piping work on the system, take the
following precautions.
2) Work procedure
The work must be carried out according to a controlled procedure in order to
minimize the risk of the presence of flammable gases or vapors during execution.
3) General work area
The people in charge of installing and maintaining the appliance in the local area
must be educated on the nature of the work performed. Work in confined spaces
must be avoided. The area around the workspace must be sectioned. Make sure
conditions within the area are been made safe by the control of flammable material.
4) Check for the presence of refrigerant
The area should be checked with an appropriate refrigerant detector before and
during the work, to ensure that the technician is aware of potentially flammable
atmospheres.
Make sure that the leak detector used is suitable for use with flammable refrigerants,
e.g. example not sparkling, properly sealed or intrinsically safe.
5) Presence of fire extinguishers
If hot work is to be performed on refrigeration equipment or associated parts, fire
extinguishing equipment must be available at hand, therefore a dry powder or CO2
extinguisher adjacent to the charging area.
6) No source of ignition
No person performing work in connection with a refrigeration system, which involves
exposing any piping that contains or has contained flammable refrigerant, must use
any source of ignition in a way that creates a risk of fire or explosion. All possible
