Drive Replacement
to update the drive Vital Product Data
(VPD) and is used only when replacing a tape drive canister. For information on
replacing a drive canister, see “Replacing a Tape Drive Canister or FC 1663 Tape Drive
Removal” on page 9-11. This section describes only the function of the Drive
Replacement command.
When a drive needs to be replaced, it is important to store the drive Vital Product
Data (VPD) in memory on the Library Control Blade (LCB). This data includes items
such as the microcode level, drive serial number, customer options, and drive
options. If a new drive canister FRU is being installed, the VPD data in the new drive
will not match the backup VPD on the LCB. This will cause the 3592 POST diagnostics
to display an error during the first power-ON cycle.
Before replacing a drive, the
Begin Replacement
command takes the drive offline
from the fibre channel host and causes the drive to save a log to flash memory.
After replacing a drive, the
Finishes Replacement
command stores the original
drive’s settings, including the serial number, emulation mode, WWNodeName, and
other settings into the VPD of the replacement drive. If the drive microcode level is
below the revision level on the drive you replaced, the drive microcode is updated.
Finally, it starts a subset of the Library Verify test, moving the scratch cartridge into
the drive and performing a brief test to ensure the drive is functional. It then moves
the cartridge back out of the drive. When all tests are successful, it takes the drive
online to the fibre channel host.
Connecting to the Ethernet Port
The Web User Interface to the library can be accessed from a web browser running on
any computer on the same Ethernet network as the library. The Ethernet network
connection on the rear of the Library Control Blade (LCB) can also be used by service
personnel by connecting a laptop directly to the Ethernet port. When servicing a
library, connect your laptop to this port to access the Web User Interface. This will
require disconnecting the Ethernet cable that goes to the host or to the router from the
library.
