Chapter 4. Replacing components
This chapter contains information about IBM customer replaceable units (CRUs)
and field replaceable units (FRUs) for the EXP3000 and instructions for
replacement parts that are not installed during a typical installation.
Replaceable EXP3000 components
Replaceable components are of three types:
v
Tier 1 customer replaceable unit (CRU): Replacement of Tier 1 CRUs is your
responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for
the installation.
v
Tier 2 customer replaceable unit: You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or
request IBM to install it, at no additional charge, under the type of warranty
service that is designated for your server.
v Field replaceable unit (FRU): FRUs must be installed only by trained service
technicians.

see the IBM Machine Type 1727 Warranty and Support Information document on
the IBM Documentation CD that comes with the EXP3000.

Installation guidelines
Before you begin installing the EXP3000, read the following information:
v
Read the safety information beginning on page iii and the guidelines in “Handling
static-sensitive devices” on page 22. This information will help you work safely
with the EXP3000 and options.
v Make sure that you have an adequate number of properly grounded electrical
outlets for the EXP3000 and other devices that you will connect to the EXP3000.
v
Back up all important data before you make changes to disk drives.
