Cylinder and piston

The cylinder and the piston are two of the components exposed to most strain in the engine. They must 
withstand, for example, high speeds, large temperature swings and high pressure. Moreover, they must be 
resistant to wear. Despite these tough working conditions, major piston and cylinder failure is relatively 
uncommon. The reasons for this include new coatings in the cylinder bore, new types of oil and grease and 
refi ned manufacturing techniques.

When servicing these components, cleanliness is of the utmost importance. It is therefore recommended 
that the cylinder and the area around it be thoroughly cleaned before being dismantled from the crankcase.

Dismantling

 

Do the following to facilitate the process:

Disconnect the throttle cable and sepa-
rate the connections on the short-circuit 
cables.

Remove the screws holding the engine to 
the vibrational dampers.

Lift out the engine.

Dismantling

 

Do the following to facilitate the process:

Unhook the throttle cable from the carbu-
rettor and separate the connections to the 
short-circuit cable.

Remove the 4 screws holding the engine 
to the vibrational dampers.

Lift out the engine and the fi tted cutting 
deck.

Remove the cutting deck from the engine.

Remove the three screws (A) and lift out 
the cutting deck from the engine.

Dismantle the following parts:

Spark plug, air fi lter, carburettor, heat protective plate, fan house cover with fi tted starter, 
ignition module (do not lose the spacer sleeves), cylinder cover, distance piece and the 
heat protective plate that is fi tted to the cylinder.

Remove both screws holding the cylinder to the crankcase.

Lift the cylinder straight up. Do not turn it as the piston ring can easily break.

Use a rag to cover the crankcase opening under the piston.
