Desktop Security
Compaq Fingerprint Identification Technology, developed in partnership with Identicator, a leader
in biometric identification technology, eliminates the need for end-user passwords, tightens
network security, simplifies the login process, and reduces the costs associated with managing
corporate networks.
The one-time registration of an individual’s fingerprint takes only minutes. A tiny camera in the
Fingerprint Identification Reader captures an image of the fingerprint and uses complex algorithms
to convert the image into a unique “map” of minutiae points. This map of minutiae points (not the
actual fingerprint) is then encrypted and stored within the network. Individuals need not be
concerned about personal privacy issues as the fingerprint is not stored and cannot be recreated
from the minutiae points.
Once an individual’s fingerprint is registered, the network login process is simple and fast. By
placing a registered finger on the reader attached to their PC, the end-user instantly logs on to the
network. No other end-user passwords are required.
Compaq Fingerprint Identification Technology dramatically improves network security because it
eliminates the need to enter passwords. It essentially replaces end-user passwords with something
that can’t be stolen or duplicated - a human fingerprint that is unique to every individual.
