Introduction
1-2
Supportfng the specific operating procedures is a body of general "Reference Material". You will
have to become familiar with this information, which will be useful
10
you in many of the
mEldSuremell1!. you make with the laser Measurement System.
The Appendices contain information that is useful or intercsting to know, but is nOl vitally
Important to your ability to make a measurement with the laser MeasUicmenl System.
HOW SAFE IS THE LASER?
The laser source used in this measurement system is a low-power lIes than
1
mW) Helium-Neon
laser,
It
will nOI cut metal, burn paper, or cook your food. Special safelY equipment in the form of
tinted glasses, shielding, etc., is not required.
However. this device
15
a state-of-the art scientific instrument, and should be Ireated with Cllre
and respect. We are required to provide
In
this User'sGuidc cerlain WARNINGs and CAUTIONs,
which you should read before you
turn
on the laser.
The most Imporlant thing to remember is Ihal neither you nor any other person should stare
directly at the laser light beam. or at any reflection of
It
from a polished surface.
For additional WARNINGs and CAUTIONs, see the front of this Ulier's Guide.
WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD I TAKEl
In addition to protecting your eyes by avoiding staring at the laser light or bright reflections of
11-
1.
Remember that the laser Mealiurement System
15
operated from power-line voltages. Take
care to be sure that all its cables are always in good condition (no short
circuits,
damaged
insulation, etc.), and that they are routed where they will not be damaged by equipment or
people. Also be careful In routing the cables that they wUI not cau!>!! people to trip and/m
cause an unwary person
10
pull one or both of the
units
oH its support.
2. Although the laser Measurement System's elcctronlr.s hardware
..
nd Its Optics
are fairly
rugged, they can be damaged by abuse (dropping, excessive vibration, eKcessive temper
ature or humidity,
ctc.).
Try to usc and siore the laser Measurement SYloolem's components
only In places where they are not subject to abuse. Detailed storage information
i5
given in
the system's service manual.
WHERE SHOULD I KEEP THE SS28A WHEN I'M NOT USING IT?
The laser Measurement System's electronic hardware and Optia shoukl be kept where they are
not subJect to phySical abuse, excessive dirt, temperature, moisture, or vibration. Convenient
storage kits are provided for the Optics. Hardware and c;abl should be kept In boxes, but may
be kepi on open shelves in relatively clean areas.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY SS28A SEEMS NOT TO BE WORKINGl
in general, that depend on whill you think the problem
is.
Initially,
ror "Error" messages displayed by the Measurement Display
unit, turn
to Section
17
for
a listing of some actions you can take.
