MAINTENANCE
9. SPARK PLUG INSPECTION
INSPECTION
1. Visually inspect the spark plug. Discard the plug if the
insulator is cracked or chipped.
2. Measure the plug gap with a wire-type gauge. If
necessary, adjust the gap by bending the side electrode.
3. Make sure the sealing washer is in good condition and
replace if necessary.
4. Install the plug finger-tight to seat the washer, then tighten
with a plug wrench to compress the sealing washer:
Tighten a new plug 1/2 turn after the plug seats. Tighten a
reused plug 1/8 ~ 1/4 turn after the plug seats.
TORQUE: 20 N•m (14 lb-ft)
NOTICE
• Using an incorrect spark plug can cause engine damage.
Use the recommended spark plug or an exact equivalent.
• A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine.
Overtightening can damage the threads in the cylinder head.
10. SPARK ARRESTER CLEANING
(OPTIONAL PART)
CLEANING
The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it
functioning as designed. Allow the engine to cool before
proceeding with this procedure.
1. Allow the engine to cool.
2. Unclip the two red top cover tabs [1] on the muffler side of
the engine, and then slightly lift the red top cover up to
expose the upper muffler shield bolt (
3. Remove the three bolts [2] from the muffler shield [3] using a
10 mm socket wrench.
4. Remove the muffler shield [3].
5. Remove the set screw [4].
6. Remove the spark arrester [5] from the muffler [6].
7. Check for carbon deposits on the spark arrester and the
exhaust port. Brush carbon deposits away. Be careful to
avoid damaging the spark arrester screen. Inspect the
screen for holes or tears and replace if necessary.
8. Install the spark arrester into the muffler.
9. Install the muffler shield on the engine, and tighten the three
bolts securely.
