6 | WHERE TO INSTALL
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends installing a smoke alarm in the following areas:
1. Inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, within 21 feet (6.4 meters) of any door to a sleeping room,
and on every level of the home including the basement.
2. On levels without bedrooms, install alarms in the living room/den/family room, and /or near the staircase to
another level.
3. Do not install near windows, doors, or ducts where drafts might interfere with their operation.
4. If installing in the basement, place on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading to the next level.
5. Install at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance to reduce chances of false alarms when cooking.
When installing on a slopped ceiling,
place device at least
4 inches down from apex of the peak, but within 3 feet from
the peak.
