Closed Captions
‡ C losed captioning is a process which converts the audio
portion of a television progra m into written words
which then appear as subtitles on the television screen.
C losed captions allow viewers to read the dialogue and
narration of television progra m s.
Using Closed Captions
‡ C aptions are the subtitles of the dialogue and
narration of television progra m s. F or prerecorded
progra m s, progra m dialogue can be arranged
into captions in advance. I ts possible to caption a
live progra m b y using a process called real-ti m e
captioning, which creates captions instantl y .
‡ Real-ti m e captioning is nor m all y done b y professional
reporters using a m achine shorthand s y ste m and
co m puter for translation into English. C aptioning is an
effective s y ste m for the hearing-i m paired, and it can
also aid in teaching language skills.
‡ I n ATV m ode the CC D function allows y ou to
configure the wa y y ou choose to view the digital
captioning (O ff, CC 1, CC 2, CC 3, CC 4, Text 1, Text 2,
Text 3 or Text 4 ) .

The ter m for the words that scroll across the botto m
of the TV screen, usuall y the audio portion of the
progra m provided for the hearing i m paired.

The ter m for the words that appear in a large black
fra m e and al m ost cover the entire screen; usuall y

service 2, service 3, service 4, service 5 or service 6 ) .

available b y the caption provider.
‡ There are 6 standard services. S ervice 1 is designated
as the Pri m ar y C aption S ervice. This service contains
the verbati m , or near-verbati m captions for the
pri m ar y language being spoken in the acco m pan y ing
progra m audio. S ervice 2 is designated as the
S econdar y L anguage S ervice. This service contains
captions in a secondar y language which are
translations of the captions in the pri m ar y C aption
S ervice. The other service subchannels are not pre-
assigned. I t is up to the discretion of the individual
caption provider to utilize the re m aining service
channels.
