Area Defect File Format
The area defect file is similar to the linear defect file format in that there is a header line followed by a
table. The header line displays the minimum defect size threshold. The image below is resized to show
the overall format of the file.
The first 4-6 columns indicate the outline of the defect in terms of file distance and lateral offset. The
Start Station and End Station Columns are only present if “Use Stationing Format” is checked in the
Project Properties The last 8 columns provide the GPS coordinates of the 4 corners of the defect. Note,
that for scenarios where the defect extends around a curve, the GPS coordinates may not adequately
describe the true area of the defect.
The Defect Area KML file drops into Google Earth. Each defect appears as a white filled polygon. White
was chosen as the color so that both linear and area defects can be shown overlaid.
