Connect the elevator linkages to the servo output arms and horns using the outermost
linkage holes at each point. Adjust the pushrod lengths so that the control surfaces on
both sides of the fuselage are exactly at the neutral (centre) position when the servos
are at neutral. Use a servo tester or your transmitter to check this point. Install the
receiver and receiver battery (if used) in the rear part of the recess in the fuselage top
deck, packed in foam rubber for safety. The flight battery should also be secured with
foam rubber to prevent it shifting in flight.
To give the model an impressive scale finish we recommend that you apply the water-
slide decals (transfers) in the arrangement shown in the following illustrations.
The best method of application is to lay the transfers on a sheet of plastic, spray water
onto them, and wait until they can be slid sideways. Gently slide them into position on
the model, and wipe them lightly with a piece of paper towel to force the water out from
underneath.
Tip: if you are particularly keen on scale appearance, enter the number VFA- 102 into a
search engine on the Internet, and you will find superb three-view drawings of our
machine, which make it very simple to position the transfers accurately.
Connect the servo leads to the receiver in the appropriate sequence (see your RC
system instructions). Pack the receiver and receiver battery in foam rubber in their
compartment. If you are not using a 2.4 GHz radio control system, it is really essential to
use a PCM receiver, and route the aerial out of the fuselage by the shortest possible
route. The flight battery is also designed to be held in place with foam rubber, but for
additional security it makes good sense to use Velcro tape (Order No. 3368).
Once you have installed all the RC system components and the flight battery, it is almost
certain that the Centre of Gravity will be within the stated range of 95 to 110 mm,
measured from the wing root leading edge, where it meets the fuselage. The model is
very forgiving of CG discrepancies; even if set up slightly tail-heavy its flying
characteristics are not markedly inferior.

The model should be balanced at a point within the range 95 to 110 mm measured from
the wing root leading edge, at the transition point between wing and fuselage.
First flight:
Assemble the model as described in these instructions, program the radio control
system as explained above, and charge all the batteries fully. There is now no excuse
for not flying the aeroplane!
Building the model is straightforward, but adjusting the retractable undercarriage
requires patience, and the model is demanding to fly. On the other hand, it looks
extremely impressive in the air. For ground take-off you will need a fairly long, flat
asphalt strip, although hand-launching is also possible.
