INTRODUCTION
Magneto therapy applying low frequency pulsating magnetic fields is by now recognized from
numerous medical reports as a valid physical therapy, with positive biological effects,
especially suitable in the treatment of bony fractures and of illness of inflammatory and chronic
degenerative type.
The Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) magnetic fields seem to act on the soft structures because
of micro current that are proportional to the intensity and to the variation speed of the magnetic
field, beeing caused by the electro-motrice forces induced by the variation of the magnetic field.
To explain the interaction between the living organism and the magnetic fields one refers often
to the theory of the "biological crystals" and to the crystalline-like structures of the cellular
membranes, that endowed with piezo-electric propriety, would transform the applied magnetic
variation in variation of their electric state and they accordingly would also determine
mechanical micro modifications of the bony structures. Since the micro modifications are
dependent from the direction of the induced current, the explanation of the effects reported by
some patients regarding the reduction or growing acute of pains due to magneto-therapic
treatment could be sought-after in the orientation of the magnetic field applied and consequent
direction of the induced modifications.
When a therapeutic session is planned it is necessary to analyze the course of the magnetic field
variation induced current: in a cylindrical solenoid the direction of the lines of the magnetic flux
is parallel to the axle of the cylinder and the induced current. For instance in a femur immerged
in such field, perpendicular to the above said axle and therefore perpendicular to the axle of the
femur, this is true. If the same femur is immerged in a field constituted from two plain solenoids
with coherent flux, the induced current would result parallel to the axle of the femur. An
induced current parallel to the axle of the femur seems to give mostly positive results with
reference to effect comparative experiences. That is valid for bony lesions, for instance
osteoporosis or delays of consolidation, as well in presence of cutaneous substance loss, of
wounds, or of soft parts.
For the same reason the stimulation of a bony lesion on the trunk or on the basin should be
effected dipping the zone in a cylindrical solenoid to get induced current that are parallel to the
object of treatment osseous structures.
The effect of the magnetic field mediate from the generation of electro-motrice induced forces
would explain the difference of positiveness of the results reported by different researchers
which used magnetic fields with different variation modality and therefore inducing different
electro-motrice forces also with the same field intensity.
